If you rely on a massage gun for sweet relief from sore muscles, you might want to take a closer look at your device: One popular model was just recalled due to a risk of overheating, which could pose burn and fire hazards.
On January 4, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of more than 46,000 of Homedics’ Therapist Select Percussion Personal Massagers, which were sold at major retailers including Macy’s, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Lowe’s, The Home Depot, and Amazon. According to the release, the company received at least 17 reports of the device overheating while charging—an issue that left one consumer with a thumb burn.
The massage gun in question, model HHP-715, is black and has “Homedics” printed on the side of the barrel. Only devices with manufacturing dates in 2022 or earlier are included in the recall, per the release. (The 4-digit date code is located on the barrel and is formatted as WWYY. So, WW indicates the week, and YY the year.)
If your tension-relieving tool checks all those boxes, the CPSC urges you to stop using (and charging) it ASAP and contact Homedics for a full refund or credit towards a new product. And even if your device isn’t part of the recall, it’s still a good (and safe) idea to do a quick touch test while it’s charging—and make sure it’s not unusually hot.
